Introduction Section

This will not be the first page of your coursework as you will have lists of contents and illustrations plus a title page, but it is the first part of the written text and it is here that the examiners are looking for evidence of a well planned and well ordered investigation. You need to demonstrate that you have a clear understanding of WHY you are carrying out this investigation by using key geographical terms and ideas on which the study is based and that your choice of method is appropriate.

Include the following points

1ST paragraph

  • State your hypothesis. Describe your title and define any key words from your title.
  • Say WHY you are investigating this topic and explain what you are going to do.
  • Add a mind map of what you are going to do
2nd paragraph

  • You need to describe where your coursework is located in a written description, making specific reference to your maps
  • 3 maps of various scales e.g. South West, Taunton, Various street levels
  • Maps must be labelled

3rd paragraph

  • You must be able to explain the “geography” – how does your question link in to the settlement topic?
  • Define your key terms and ideas
  • Possible terms: location, land use, CBD, urban morphology, commuter, sphere of influence, order of goods, burgess model, accessibility, comparison, environment, pollution, RUF, etc.
  • Draw a relevant diagram, for example, burgess model, settlement hierarchy, cost of land, etc. and annotate / overlay over map - LINK this to YOUR own coursework by adding street names, etc.
  • Include a definitions page of key terms you will use in coursework

4th paragraph

  • Create a set of key questions. These will be answered in the conclusion and will help you answer your main title. (3-5 will do)

  • PREDICT some outcomes that you expect to find from your investigation i.e. what do you think you are going to find out about how housing changes from the CBD to the RUF?

The power point below shows some examples of good practice over the last few years:
